Winter Care For Your Precious Pooch

Winter is now upon us.
We're grabbing our heavy coats and boots from the backs of our closets, preparing for the cold months.
While we bundle up, we often forget about our dogs.
It is true that dogs' fur coats help keep them warm in the winter, but there are a few things you can do to make sure your pet is happy and comfortable.
If you take your dog outside often, then his paws are constantly exposed to the cold ground, snow, or ice.
This exposure can cause the paw pads to crack and bleed, creating a truly uncomfortable situation for your pet.
It's important to take care of your dog's paws during the colder months.
The easiest way to add a layer of protection is to invest in dog boots.
Just like your boots, dog boots will protect your pooch's paws when you go outside.
Make sure you look for water-resistant boots, since you don't want your dog to be cold and wet.
Boots with Velcro straps at the top are great for most dogs; the Velcro will ensure that the boots stay on the paws.
If your pooch doesn't like to wear boots or if you just can't find any that are appropriate, then there are other at-home ways to keep your pet's paws in good winter health.
First, it's important to keep the hair between the dog's toes and around the feet and ankles trimmed.
This hair can be a magnet for ice and debris that will irritate the paws.
Trimming the hair is a quick and simple process that can be accomplished at the same time you trim the nails.
Second, petroleum jelly can do wonders for keeping the paw pads in good condition.
Rubbing the jelly on the bottom of the paws before going outside provides an insulating layer.
Rubbing jelly on the paws when your pooch gets back inside can help ease and heal any sores or cracks.
Just because your pooch is indoors doesn't mean he's fully protected from the cold.
More than likely, your home is also cooler during the winter months.
Make sure your pet is comfortable by having a dog bed or two throughout your home.
Adding an extra blanket wouldn't hurt.
You can also purchase dog pajamas for the winter.
The pajamas are great for more than just keeping your pet warm.
They also trap the shedding hair.
So instead of the hair going all over your home, it's trapped in the clothes until you give them a good wash.
Keeping your pet warm and comfortable in the winter isn't a difficult task.
Dry, cracked paw pads can be painful for pets.
By purchasing an extra booties or petroleum jelly, you can make all the difference in your pet's comfort.
Don't assume that your pooch is warm just because he's inside your home.
A bed and an extra blanket can ensure your dog is warm and cozy this winter.
