Coconut Palace – The Striking Showpiece

Built of several types of Philippine coconut shells, hardwood and a special coconut lumber, the Coconut Palace in Manila, Philippines serves as the principal workplace and official residence of the country's Vice President. Commissioned for Pope John Paul II's visit by the former First Lady Imelda Marcos in 1981, the palace is described by its architect Francisco Manosa as a showpiece highlighting the versatility of a coconut as well as its feasibility as an export.

Built in 1978, the palace has the shape of an octagon whilst its roof resembles a traditional Filipino hat. Among its many highlights are the dining table made of 40,000 small pieces of inlaid coconut shells and the 101 coconut shell chandelier. Recognised as one of the region's most striking structures for its exceptional architecture, the palace celebrates the coconut as the ultimate ‘Tree of Life'. The form, ornamentation and design of the palace echo a coconut's many elements, from its shell to its flower, fruit, bark and even roots.

Aside from the priceless genius design and excellent architecture of the palace, it is also popular nationwide and beyond as an ideal venue for a romantic wedding celebration. Presenting an intimate atmosphere that seduces not only couples but also their wedding guests, it is surrounded by breathtaking poolside and ocean views. Various TV shows such as the reality show ‘The Amazing Race' have featured the Palace.

However, today the magnificent Coconut Palace is a unique museum with its seven guestrooms displaying different regional styles of furnishing and home interior design. The Zamboanga Room, Pampanga Room showcasing Kampampangan art with statues made of lahar from Mount Pinatubo, Marawi Room representing Muslim Mindanao, Bicol Room facing the Manila Bay, Mountain Province Room housing traditional Ifugao tribal artefacts, Iloilo Room and Pangasinan Room make up the seven rooms at the palace.

If you are in search of the most luxurious Manila serviced apartments, you will be delighted to find Ascott Makati housing an array of apartments designed exclusively for corporate travellers and their families.
