- 1). Insert a bolt through the hole in one or more objects, based on the project at hand.
- 2). Place a common flat washer on the end of the bolt. Slide the washer down the bolt until it rests against the object.
- 3). Place a split-lock washer on the bolt and slide it down until it contacts the flat washer.
- 4). Thread a nut onto the threads of the bolt and turn it to finger-tighten the nut as much as possible.
- 5). Hold the head of the bolt with an adjustable wrench. Place a socket wrench on the nut. Hold the bolt head steady with the wrench and turn the adjustable wrench to tighten the nut down onto the bolt so the split-lock washer will become compressed and hold the nut in place.
