The Gesta Romanorum or Deeds of the Romans is a collection of moralizing and didactic anecdotes about famous Romans (and others) that may have been compiled in the fourteenth century. Shakespeare's Pericles and Merchant of Venice may have been derived from the Gesta Romanorum and Chaucer's Man of Law's Tale may also have been partly derived from it.
