- The NFL Draft started in 1936. That draft consisted of nine rounds with the number of rounds per draft varying over the years. In 1994, the draft was shortened to seven rounds--a number that remains in effect as of 2010.
- Since 1970 the CFL has held its own draft. While non-Canadian players can play in the CFL, the draft is restricted to Canadian players who played college football in either Canada or the United States.
- For its inaugural draft in 2009, UFL teams drafted both undrafted college players and players not currently under contract with an NFL team.
- Since 1976, the final player in selected in the NFL Draft has been invited to "Irrelevant Week"--a week that "celebrates the underdog"--in Newport Beach, California. The week includes a banquet and the presentation of the Lowsman Trophy.
- In 1936, the Philadelphia Eagles drafted Jay Berwanger--a halfback from the University of Chicago. Despite being the league's first-ever draft pick, Berwanger never played in the NFL.
