There is an old proverb that says: 'Don't cross the bridge, until you reach the river'. And sure it is a metaphor for not being rush in our decisions and to follow the logical sequence of events. But I never thought that this proverb will be applied literally to my Grandpa. I even was surprised that he didn't follow such a classic and known proverb.
After what happened in the last trip for Grandpa, while trying to explore a new fishing area, he decided to go to one of his classic spots that he used to go fishing in. He met his fellow fisherman and discussed all the possibilities, they did their calculations about the time and the water level in the place they were heading, and all the factors that guarantee a big hunt, and exciting fishing day. After setting all the preparations, they decided to go fishing in a canal coming out from a fresh water lake that was used in irrigating some private farms. 'It is a place full of giant fishes 'confirming my Grandpa with a very confident smile.
Early before dawn time, Grandpa met his fellow fisherman, and they started their fishing trip. They reached the place really early and were very optimistic when they found the water level exactly in the right level. They had to walk for a while along the canal side to reach their secret spot, but when they reached this spot there was a surprise for them. There were some water hyacinths 'weeds that grow on the shores of fresh water', covering their spot completely and preventing them from the big hunt. They looked around for a while but the place was completely covered.
'What a bad luck?!' saying Grandpa sadly, 'what are we going to do now?' completing with real sorrow in his voice.
Fellow fisherman replied: 'Umm..., I was not expecting this at all', shaking his head sadly, 'why don't we search for a new spot?' adding fellow fisherman with low voice.
Grandpa: 'we will lose a very valuable time; we don't want the sun to rise before we start catching some big fishes!'
Then Grandpa thought of a really good idea. 'Why don't we go to the other side?' said Grandpa feeling happy with this idea, 'The place there is clear and we can still reach our spot from over there' adding happily.
Fellow fisherman: 'But the bridge is far from here, to reach it and get back to our spot we will lose the valuable time you talked about'
Grandpa: 'how about using this tube?' he said this while looking at a large tube over the canal, 'we can use it to cross the canal, the tube is large and the width of the canal is not that big.' Grandpa was really excited about this idea.
Fellow fisherman was very surprised saying: 'Are you losing you mind?!! We are old enough to do this', then he completed angrily 'This is very risky, I will not do this'.
Grandpa tried to convince his fellow about the benefits of doing this, and how they will save time and save their power also instead of walking a long distance, but fellow fisherman didn't accept. Finally they agreed that fellow fisherman will cross using the bridge, while Grandpa will take the risk and cross over the large tube to the other side of the canal. 'When you came back from your long walk, you will find me catching a lot of fishes.' yelling Grandpa in irony to his fellow, who already started his walk towards the bridge. Grandpa lifted his fishing bag and his fishing rods, and started crossing over the large tube.
'He will regret his time' whispering Grandpa to himself, while making his first step on the tube. The steps were slow and Grandpa was trying to be careful as possible, he started to feel how crazy was his idea, but he refused to let go his idea fearing from the irony of his fellow. Another few steps Grandpa reached the middle of the tube, and suddenly 'Whopps... SPLASH", as you can imagine the tube was wet and Grandpa feet slipped over it directly into the middle of the water along with all his equipment. The surprise froze him for seconds, then he started to save his equipment first, he tried to put his bag and fishing rods over the tube, but he put them and they slip from the other side. He tried to save himself and climb the tube, but he slip again and again. The situation was very messy; he was wet along with all of his belongings.
He decided to hinge himself to the tube and use it as guidance to the shore, while he is in water. Very slowly doing this, he managed to reach the other side of the canal, in a miserable state, dropping water from every inch, and to make things worse, fellow fisherman reached the other side at the same time to find Grandpa in this situation. Laughing out loudly in a hysteric way 'you must be kidding me!' then completed 'what have you done? I can't stop myself from laughing.'
Grandpa very shy of what happened replied: 'My foot slipped over the tube'.
Fellow fisherman still laughing: 'but you are wet all over'
Grandpa looking to the ground from shy: 'actually I slipped more than once, with all my equipment!!'
Fellow fisherman tried to get himself serious: 'ok never mind, I was expecting something like that to happen. Thanks God you are safe'
Grandpa: 'Yeah, you were right. But I just didn't want to waste the time'.
Fellow fisherman couldn't hold it anymore, and burst in laughing again: 'You have all the time to dry yourself now'
Grandpa looked at him and burst in laughing also: 'look at me, what a big fish I am now?!'
Grandpa started drying everything in the sun, and got undressed from all his clothes, except his 'underwear' and sure fellow fisherman didn't stop laughing specially when he looks at Grandpa and remembers the situation. They both didn't try to catch any fishes; they waited till everything got dry and decided to go home after this 'exciting' trip. Fellow fisherman couldn't stop himself from telling Grandpa: 'This teach us to remember; don't cross the river until you reach the bridge'. They both laughed again and went home directly.
