What is a long range tank?

A long range tank is either a replacement fuel tank that allows you to carry more fuel, or it is an auxiliary tank which is another tank added onto the vehicle. Either way, you are able to carry more fuel and as a result you have to stop less often. A long range fuel tank will usually take the amount of fuel that you can carry from 60 - 90 litres (standard amount for a four wheel drive) up to 120 - 160 litres. This makes a massive difference when you are towing because you don't have to stop as often. Many modern four wheel drives achieve 10 litres per 100 km, meaning that you can travel well over a thousand kilometres on a tank, without filling up.

The primary advantage of having a long range tank is that you can select where you want to fill up. Much like when you are driving around town and you avoid the expensive petrol stations, you are able to drive through the towns that have expensive fuel and fill up at the major points. By doing this you end up saving a considerable amount of money. Considering that a Long Range Tank only costs around a thousand dollars, you recoup that very quickly. A long range tank is designed only to carry diesel or unleaded fuel. For LPG, you need to get an extra tank fitted, which is not usually practical. This is because they are always cylindrical and the gas burns inefficiently compared to unleaded and diesel.

Something to be aware of when it comes to Long range tanks is the design. The more that the tank tucks into the body the better. The more clearance that you have from the fuel tank to the ground the better off you will be. Long Range Tanks [http://www.aaronschubert.com/4x4/long-range-fuel-tank/] have a habit of dragging on the ground, which is a serious issue if you are going over rocks. However, they are one of the most popular 4x4 Accessories [http://www.aaronschubert.com/4x4/4x4-accessories/].
