- Check your credit card agreement to determine the method and manner required to claim credit charges on your open credit card account for disputed items, chargebacks, lost credits, misapplied payments or overpayments. Most credit card companies give you the option of having a temporary credit issued to your account account while they investigate a dispute with your creditor or locate lost credits for items that were returned or canceled. For overpayments, you can either request a credit to your account or a refund check.
- Keep all copies of returned receipts or cancellation confirmations in case you need to dispute a lost or misapplied credit with your old credit card company or a merchant or service provider. Otherwise, you may have a difficult time obtaining the credit.
- The Consumer Credit Protection Act is a federal statute regulating the use of charge accounts including claiming credit charges and protects consumers by requiring that written disclosures of credit and finance terms be provided to consumers.
