- 1). Open the hood. Remove the negative terminal on the battery with the ratchet. Remove the positive terminal next. Jack up the front end of the Quest using the jack and then place jack stands underneath the jack points on the sides of the vehicle. Lower the jack to set the van on the stands.
- 2). Unbolt the undercarriage cover at the front of the engine using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then move it out of the way. Locate the alternator on the driver's side of the engine, down by the bottom of the motor. Loosen the idler pulley adjusting bolt, which is in the center of the engine. Unplug the electrical connections on the alternator. Loosen the bolts holding it in place using an open-end wrench.
- 3). Pivot the alternator so that the belt becomes loose. Slide the belt off of the alternator pulley with your hands. Unbolt the alternator the rest of the way from the engine block using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Carefully lower the alternator out of the engine block with both hands.
- 4). Lift the replacement alternator into the engine bay and slide the alternator mounting bolts into their pivot points. Hold the alternator so that you can slide the belt over the pulley. Pull the alternator to tighten the belt, then tighten the bolts on the alternator with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.
- 5). Reconnect the electrical connections on the alternator by hand. Reinstall the engine undercarriage cover using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Lower the van off of the stands using the jack. Reinstall the battery connections with the ratchet, installing the positive terminal first, then the negative terminal.
