- Many who are invited to a product party like a Mary Kay party feel pressure because they are not sure if they are obligated to purchase something. Per party etiquette, a party guest is not obligated to buy something, their attendance is enough. The hostess is likely aware that not every invited person will buy something. A lot of the time, friends are invited simply for moral support. A party will be more successful with more people in attendance, even if they will not become customers. The more people at the party, the more social and fun the event becomes.
- If you still feel uncomfortable attending the party without purchasing some of the products, volunteer to bring something to the event. By bringing a dish, dessert, appetizer or even a bottle of wine or other beverage, you are contributing to the party. This can make the guest feel more comfortable and likewise make the party planning easier on the host.
- Even if you are not intending to purchase products at the party, refrain from socializing or interrupting the host's presentation of the products. Be attentive, interested and respectful during the presentation. Ask questions and give feedback to let the host know you are engaged. Your comments and participation help to support the host and also encourages others to participate as well. Your attentiveness could result in some purchases from other guests.
- Keep your cell phone turned off or set to silent or vibrate during the party. A cell phone going off mid-presentation could be very distracting for the host. It would also appear to be in poor taste to take a phone call in the middle of the party. If you must take a call, ask the host if you could use an empty room to talk or step outside for a few minutes. Above all, keep in mind you are there to participate in the party, either for moral support or product purchasing or both. Be sure you do not let your cell phone pull you outside the social circle of the party.
- While Mary Kay parties will likely be casual and won't dictate business dress like a suit, don't take the casual dress into the realm of laziness. While jeans and a nice top will fit in well with the party, be sure not to take the laid-back atmosphere of the host's home to mean you can show up in a sweat suit or pajamas. A social product party like a Mary Kay party is a good opportunity to show off the sleek pair of stilettos you just bought or a fun new sundress. Dress to impress, even if the party is in someone's home.
