How to Be a Proactive Employee

    • 1). Learn your job to the best of your ability. Complete your individual training and offer help to others who may need assistance mastering the job. Ask questions if you're unsure of anything. Attend any optional additional training sessions. Proactive employees display complete competence in job performance.

    • 2). Communicate safely and effectively with all members of your job, whether they are co-workers, customers or other affiliates. Proofread all emails, memos and other written correspondence to make sure your tone is professional, but friendly. Avoid potentially offensive jokes or statements.

    • 3). Treat each person you meet with friendliness and respect. No one is going to be happy-go-luck every day, but employers notice workers who smile and walk with confidence each day, regardless of setbacks or problems. Address any problems through the proper channels, instead of making personal comments or affronts. Never react to another person with anger.

    • 4). Keep your workspace, files or other work-related objects clean and organized. Be ready to provide your supervisor with a paper or file if requested. Good organizational skills mark a responsible employee who's ready and able to offer services at a moment's notice.

    • 5). Take the initiative on projects, even if they seem small or insignificant. Offer to make a list of foods needed for the next holiday pot luck or research a foundation to find out if it accepts charitable donations. Such enterprising volunteerism, however small, will show your employer that you're ready to take on extra responsibilities.

    • 6). Work to the best of your capabilities at all times. Collin Crawford defines this as personal integrity in the workplace. Offer to help a struggling co-worker or stay with your team for that extra hour on Friday to make sure your team fulfills all of its goals. Proactive employees are never afraid of a little extra work, and will perform effectively for the team and company at all times.
