Bathroom Design Ideas That Focus on Color

Although you may not notice it, the bathroom design ideas that create the most striking, inviting and memorable rooms are the ones that rely heavily on the psychology of color. As you work on your own bathroom design, don't let color sit on the sidelines, as something that is just part of the decor. Color has incredible power. Working with the shades, proportion and possibilities in contrast and coordination of colors will set the atmosphere of the room even more than the height of the ceiling or the placement of the bathtub. Pay attention to the following thoughts on design ideas and color.

Color Choice

As you decide on the colors so you can decide on the appliances, fixtures and flooring, think about the atmosphere you want the room to have. Should it be very peaceful? Look at white, neutrals, pastels and other pale shades. Should it be cheerful and happy? Go with bright colors paired with white. Posh and classy? Go for contrast and simplicity in black and white or cream, with hints of red. Relaxed and easy going? Pick neutrals with coordinating jewel tones. Romantic and Elegant? Pink and red are the first to come to mind, but why not go with velvety black and cream, similar to a classy look, with the shapes bringing the elegance?

Proportion

Next, you'll need to know how the colors you have picked out are going together with your bathroom design ideas. Create a scheme with the colors in their order of importance. The dominant color is probably going to be the main wall color. About half as much of the second color should be present. Think appliances, counter top, or curtains. Have a quarter proportion of the third color, showing up in the trim or decor, from towels to artwork. The last couple colors will be accents. If your scheme is monochromatic, you have it easy. Don't be afraid to vary a little from the chosen shade, as this brings personality and interest. If you have only two colors, choose one to be dominant, the second coming in for accent purposes. Following the science of proportion will give the room an aesthetic, finished, pleasing atmosphere without anyone realizing how it was done.

Playing Visual Tricks

Don't be afraid to let color be the main design element in the room. You can even create the appearance of something that you couldn't do otherwise. Make a small room feel bigger by painting the walls a light color, with an even lighter ceiling. Pull a room out by painting two facing walls one color, and the others a different one. Experiment with the ideas of stripes, of dramatic shades, of drawing the eye into the alcove for the bath with a different color. Use contrast when you want to create a strong statement. Use coordination and subtle variation to blend and relax. Focusing on color can create a more stunning room than trying to get creative with unusual construction and expensive fixtures.

As you come up with ideas for your bathroom's design, don't let the importance of color slip under the rug. Choose the colors early on so that they can play to the best advantage. Work out proportions, and then have fun with contrasting and coordinating, bringing the bathroom to its full potential.
