Koi Fish Ponds Require a Proper Filtration System

If you plan to keep Koi fish, a good filtration system is vital.
If you want happy and healthy Koi fish, provide a nice filtration system for their pond.
They are very sensitive to the conditions of water they are living in.
So if your system is quickly and efficiently taking out harmful substances from their environment, they will live a long life.
A good filtration system keeps the biological balance in your pond.
The filters extract the waste produced by Koi fish.
If they are living in open natural environment, the waste is always taken away by the currents of the water.
Also, the volume of water there will be able to deal with the pollution factor.
However, if they are living in an artificial pond, this natural process is not available.
So you have to provide one which is effective enough.
The filter keeps successfully the biological balance.
Mechanically, the filter will clear dirt particles from the water, it will maintain the flow of water and it will take out the waste continuously.
The filter will do its work but you need to do yours also! You should take out these particles from the filter and dispose them off.
While cleaning the filters, remember not to break down the bacterial colonies residing on them.
These bacteria will bring down the toxic waste to make it less harmful.
One of the most important things which disturb Koi fish is the levels of ammonia or ph levels.
The filtration system will turn them into nitrites.
Koi fish can sustain nitrites in small quantities but they cannot tolerate high ph levels.
So in addition to filtration, you should use other methods of treating the water which will control ph levels all the time.
To support the filtration system, you should have a pump which can force the water into the filter.
The filter will not be able to circulate the water on its own, especially when the volumes of water are large.
The pump will do their job.
As the flow of water starts going directly through the filter, the dirt particles will automatically be isolated and removed.
You should also consider introducing a waterfall or a fountain which will flow all the water through the pond.
This will ensure a good supply of oxygen which is vital for the fish.
The fountain will stir up the water and that will allow the oxygen to go into the water in a natural way.
You should carry out weekly tests for the chemical contents of the water.
This can be done in two ways.
First, take some sample from the pond and go to your pet shop to get it tasted.
Alternatively, you can buy a testing kit from the shop and do the testing yourself.
It is very important to maintain the composition of chemicals in the water at a safe level all the time.
Every hobby requires some time and effort.
If you take pleasure in spending time by a beautiful pond where koi fish are swimming happily in a natural environment, you should put in some efforts.
In fact it is the responsibility of the fish-keeper who is maintaining Koi Fish.
The pleasure of enjoying peacefully the beautiful Koi fish is most rewarding for the effort.
