- Before you even begin to entertain the thoughts of drilling holes into your bowling ball, be sure you've taken all of the proper measurements. While measuring your finger size is the first step to take, many forget that it's also important to measure the distance between the thumb and fingers. These measurements are easily taken with a finger-span measuring ball that most pro shops will let you use for free.
- Once you have your measurements, drill the holes a little wider than your finger size. This allows for easy insertion. Don't worry about drilling the holes too wide. If that, happens you can always use inserts for better grip.
Consider drilling the holes in your ball a little deeper than your fingers will go, and at a slight angle. This allows for some wiggle room and makes the ball more comfortable. - After you've finished drilling your holes, be sure to sand down the edges. A sharp edge on a bowling ball can cut your fingers pretty good. This is why a majority of bowling balls have the rim around the hole sanded down into a rounded lip.
- Just like anything else that involves heavy machinery, safety should always come first. Wear goggles to protect from the bits of bowling ball that shoot into the air during drilling. Lightweight gloves protect your hands from getting tiny cuts that, while not always visible, sting pretty bad.
