- The B-flat trumpet is the most common across today's musical genres. It has three valves and a key range from F sharp to below middle C, which gives the B-flat the versatility for use in music ranging from country to jazz to classical.
- The C trumpet is the instrument of choice in large orchestral settings. A three-valver, slightly smaller than the B-flat, it produces a brilliant sound and plays well alongside B-flats. Young trumpeters usually are started on a B-flat and progress to a C trumpet.
- With just half the tubing length of a B-flat trumpet, the Piccolo trumpet is the smallest variety of trumpet. Piccolo's have four valves and are played typically in the keys of A and B-flat. When played in the upper registers, they produce a piercing, bright sound.
