How to Fit a Door Knob

    • 1). Remove the old doorknob. According to Bob Vila, it is beneficial to take note of the direction the knob turns when you take it out. This will assist you in replacing the knob.

    • 2). Identify the type of doorknob and lock-set you have. The lock-set is simply the locking part of the knob. According to Tim Carter, there are two basic types: cylindrical and mortise. Mortise lock-sets are identifiable by the large cavity required for installation of the box containing the locking mechanism. Cylindrical styles are much simpler to install and usually cheaper to purchase.

    • 3). Identify the type of door knob you have. There are four basic types according to wiseGEEK, and they are dummy knobs, keyed knobs, passage knobs and privacy knobs. A dummy knob is a non-functioning knob used just for looks. Keyed knobs require a key for entry. Passage knobs have no lock, and privacy knobs are locking only on the inside.

    • 4). Take measurements of the door, such as the depth of the door, and the distance between the center of the knob and the edge of the door. Also measure the hole from which you removed the knob. In older homes this hole is often smaller than standard. If this is the case, a kit can be purchased for enlarging it, which will prevent you from having to replace the door.

    • 5). Take note of whether the door opens to the inside or to the outside. This determines if you need a right or left hand knob.
