- 1). Fill a temporary bowl of similar size to your normal bowl with fresh water. This water can be either store-bought or from your tap, but if you use city water, be sure to also use chlorine neutralizer to make the water safe for your fish. Each brand of chlorine neutralizer is different, so be sure to read the instructions on its proper use. Let your water stand for an hour so that it's at room temperature. Once it's ready, remove your betta fish from its bowl using the fish net, and then let it out in the temporary bowl.
- 2). Pour the water out of your fish bowl. If you have gravel at the bottom of your bowl, pour it through a strainer, and rinse it thoroughly under the faucet.
- 3). Scrub your fish bowl vigorously, removing any visible signs of filth. Do not use soap or other detergents, as these might harm your betta fish, even if you carefully wash out the soap afterward.
- 4). Return the gravel to the bowl, if you use gravel. Fill the bowl with dechlorinated water, or if you use city water, use chlorine neutralizer. Let the water stand for an hour so it reaches room temperature.
- 5). Fish your betta out of the temporary bowl with the net and place it in the main fish bowl.
